Join us at the Main Library at Goodwood on Saturday, February 18 at 1 p.m. for Saturday Science, LSU’s free public talk series connecting the community to science and technology. This month, Dr. Brooks Ellwood will speak about the LSU Campus Mounds. Radiocarbon dating of the two LSU Campus Mounds indicates that they are probably the oldest known and intact man-made structure in the Americas. The older (deeper) parts of both of the Mounds contain many thin, burned ash lenses, suggesting that they may have been used for ceremonial or cremation purposes. In this talk, a detailed analysis of the Mounds and estimates of their age will be discussed. |

This week's #SundaySelection is our One Book One Community pick, The Blues: The Authentic Narrative of My Music and Culture by Chris Thomas King. Prior histories on the blues have alleged it originated on plantations in the Mississippi Delta. But author & musician Chris Thomas King disagrees, arguing the blues began as a cosmopolitan art form in New Orleans, not a rural one in the Mississippi Delta. In The Blues, King presents supporting facts to disprove such myths & preserve the authentic historical memory of his music & culture.
Join us today from 4-6 p.m. at the Main Library at Goodwood for our One Book One Community Kickoff Party! Bring the whole family to enjoy delicious food & refreshments, live music by The Michael Foster Project, crafts, & community organizations celebrating Louisiana's rich music, culture, history, & more! #ebrpl #OneBookOneCommunity #TheBlues #ChrisThomasKing |

This class is your time to learn and gain a proper understanding of Composition and the importance of light to help boost your photography skills.
We, as a class, will be photographing a model without any on-camera flash or strobe photography. Just the available light, we will walk through, troubleshoot, make adjustments and capture a portrait successfully.
We will also learn how to use light modifiers like a reflector to help capture appropriately exposed shots in not-so-great lighting

Amanda Roberts is a renowned musician who won the 2017 National Hammer Dulcimer Championship. The Hammered Dulcimer is a percussion-stringed instrument which consists of strings stretched over a trapezoidal resonant sound board and is played by being struck with handheld hammers. It is quite the treat to hear one in person!
Amanda will be accompanied by percussionist Lady Chops (Elizabeth Vidos) who performed Off-Broadway with STOMP for 10 years. They can both be seen performing at the 2023 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Together they are bringing lively music to EBRPL originating from the countries of Ireland, Scotland and Wales in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

Description: Twenty three years ago Jean Landry, The Nature Conservancy program manager for Grand Isle, started the Migratory Bird Festival out of her back yard in Grand Isle with help from a few friends. “For three years it was held in my back yard, and after we had over 320 people show up one year, it was decided we had to move it.” The Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival will celebrate 22 years in 2024. It has been a “must do “not just for birders from Louisiana but from those from around the world. Landry will talk on the festival, surviving hurricanes and the “Restore Grand Isle” efforts.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library is proud to host the Middleburg Institute at the Main Library at Goodwood on Sunday, September 15 at 6 p.m. for the premiere of Press Robinson's new book, Pressing Forward. In this down-to-earth memoir, longtime educator and community leader, Press L. Robinson, Sr. recounts his hardscrabble childhood in South Carolina, his education at Morehouse College and Howard University, his career as a professor and administrator in the Southern University system, and his activities as a community leader in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The first elected Black member of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board, Robinson consistently fought to level the playing field for Black Americans and to better the social and physical environment of his adopted city. Robinson will show a brief documentary, speak about his experiences, read some excerpts from his book, and hold a Q & A with audience members. Light refreshments will be provided. |

Join Professor Robert Mann at the Main Library at Goodwood on Sunday, February 23 at 3 p.m. as he debuts, discusses, and takes questions concerning his new historical work, You Are My Sunshine: The Biography of a Song. In his book, Prof. Mann weaves together the birth of country music, Louisiana political history, World War II, and the American civil rights movement to produce a compelling biography of one of the world’s most popular musical compositions. This is the story of a song that, despite its simple, sweet melody and lyrics, holds the weight of history within its chords. Light refreshments will be served, and copies of the book will be available for sale. Additionally, patrons can pick up sheet music and enjoy a brief introduction to EBRPL’s musical instruction database, Artistworks, available at no cost with your library card. |
