Authors, Dr. F. Wayne Stromeyer and Dr. Trenton L. James, will discuss their new book, Early Camelias in Louisiana and their extensive historical research. Camelias were once hugely popular, and the earliest varieties were especially popular along the Gulf South. Copies of their new book will be available for purchase, with an opportunity for the authors to sign.

“Cherie Quarters: The Place and the People That Inspired Ernest J. Gaines”
Presenter: Ruth Laney

Author Ruth Laney will discuss her new book that rediscovers the world of the plantation quarter in Pointe Coupee Parish that inspired its most famous resident Louisiana writer and Pulitzer Prize nominee Ernest J. Gaines. In 1991 a cabin from Cherie Quarters was donated to BREC and the Friends of Magnolia Mound to help interpret the African American experience at Magnolia Mound. Restored, this building is now the lone survivor of the vibrant community known as Cherie Quarters. Copies of Laney’s new book will be available for purchase and for autographing. |

Women’s History Month - March 2 / 2 p.m.
During Women’s History Month, you can explore Magnolia Mound through the experiences of the women who lived on the property. The 45-minute presentation will showcase the lives of women who played significant roles in the history of Magnolia Mound, from the early colonial period to those who led the preservation efforts to establish a historic house museum at Magnolia Mound.
Lafayette in America: The Nation’s Guest in Baton Rouge, 1825 - April 6 / 2 p.m.
The Marquis de Lafayette, a French soldier and American patriot, was a special guest of the United States from 1824 to 1825. Join us in commemorating the bicentennial of his visit to Louisiana and Baton Rouge by learning about Lafayette, his life, and his close connections to Magnolia Mound.
Preservation Month: 50th Anniversary of Magnolia Mound the Museum - May 4
In conjunction with National Preservation Month in May, Magnolia Mound is marking its 50th anniversary as a museum and education center. As Baton Rouge's oldest surviving frame structure, in 1975, the local community led restoration efforts to preserve the historical significance of the property and its educational value for the community. On May 4th, you can visit Magnolia Mound for a special highlighted tour and even enjoy a slice of birthday cake.
