1568523600 Live Music Museumgoer Baton Rouge Gallery September 15, 2019 September 15, 2019 4:00 PM 5:30 PM On Sunday, September 15, Alex V. Cook’s solo musical project, Museumgoer, comes to Sundays@4. As The Advocate once put it, Museumgoer is a “high-concept endeavor mixing lowbrow and highbrow,” with music based “in ambient and experimental music as well as two intentionally bland musical genres, ‘elevator’ and ‘easy listening.’” “This EP is attempt at actualizing a type of Internet surrealism - the accentuating and juxtaposition of ordinary things found online to open a door to the subconscious,” explains Cook. “I like to think these pieces show the ‘fun’ side of Museumgoer, but subsequent listens find it run-through with melancholy and even a little terror.” Details at https://www.batonrougegallery.org/event/2019/sundays4-museumgoer
1568955600 Arts & Theatre Call to Artists: Apply for Artist Membership Baton Rouge Gallery September 20, 2019 September 20, 2019 12:00 AM 12:30 AM Baton Rouge Gallery - center for contemporary art ("BRG") is a professional, non-profit, contemporary art gallery founded in 1966. When it first opened its doors, its 12 artist members represented some of the most respected visual artists in the region. Today, the same is true of its roster of more than 60 artists working in a wide array of media. One of the many things that sets BRG apart from other organizations in the region is that its artist membership is endowed with a strong voice in how the organization responds to the changing landscape of contemporary art nationally and locally. Many artistic decisions, including which special exhibitions to host and which artists are invited to join the gallery, are made by the existing artist members. This allows gallery visitors to get a different perspective than they might experience at other major institutions or commercial galleries. Right now we are inviting artists to apply for artist membership! Applications are being accepted until September 20th 2019. Information can be found on our website here: https://www.batonrougegallery.org/apply

The series takes readers inside the studios and creative spaces of artists across disciplines, allowing for an intimate look at how local art is impacted by the “where” it is created. Printmaker (and BRG artist member) Kathryn Hunter, ceramicist Osa Atoe, and musician David Hinson - who have all been profiled as part of the Frame of Mind series - will join Labat to lend insight on creative spaces and the experience of having their own documented and shared. The event, as with all Sundays@4 events, is open to the public free of charge. More details at batonrougegallery.org/event/2019/sundays4-raegan-labat.
1569992400 Arts & Theatre First Wednesday Opening: Baldridge / Corso / Oddlokken Baton Rouge Gallery October 2, 2019 October 2, 2019 6:00 PM 9:00 PM Baton Rouge Gallery (“BRG”) is proud to feature the latest works from three Louisiana based artists in October. The exhibition will be on display at BRG October 2 – 31, 2019 with no admission charges during normal gallery hours (12-6 p.m., Tuesday – Sunday). The First Wednesday Opening Reception for the exhibition will be held on October 2 (6 - 9 p.m.). The event is open to the public at no charge. In addition to the latest from these artists, you will enjoy complimentary refreshments and a live musical performance. Jamie Baldridge : 'Everything Casts A Shadow' Baldridge creates psychological scenes by manipulating and constructing photographic worlds that externalize the inner dialogues of consciousness. His dark and contemplative imagery often confronts his culture, and the human condition. Samuel Joseph Corso : 'Avery Island' While making his art career working in media like glass, Corso moves into the more fluid media of oil paint to explore the landscapes and dramatic skies of Avery Island in this exhibition. He reflects on the dramatic and sublime experience of the land, at once familiar and new. Nonney Oddlokken : 'Tiny, Little Fables: Life. Death. Gris Gris' This exhibition is part an ongoing series titled 'Tiny, Little Fables' that work together as a whole, but also stand alone. The subject matter is a push and pull on Cajun Folktales, New Orleans Legends, biblical text, and the magical realism of Oddlokken’s own childhood memories - created by her agoraphobic godmother. More details to come at batonrougegallery.org

1573970400 Family Events, Arts & Theatre, Live Music The Ukelele Orchestra - Sundays @ 4 Baton Rouge Gallery November 17, 2019 November 17, 2019 3:00 PM 6:00 PM The Ricapito Writer’s Group has been meeting since the late seventies and has included a number of distinguished members. For many decades a small band of dedicated writers has gathered one Saturday morning a month in the home of Joe and Carolyn Ricapito in order to refine their craft. Last year one of their most beloved and talented founding members, Joe Ricapito, passed away. His wife Carolyn, herself an accomplished poet and fiction writer, is making plans to move to New York state so she can be near her daughter. Before our local gem can leave us, the group has decided to have a reading in Carolyn and Joe’s honor. Sunday at 4 pm on November 17th at the Baton Rouge Gallery nine writer’s from the group will read. Starting at around 3:20pm, “The Ukelele Orchestra” will play some rousing tunes. Carolyn Ricapito will start things off with a very brief history of this long-standing and generative group. For more information and bios on all the presenters visit our website at: https://www.batonrougegallery.org/event/2019/ricapito-group

1651381200 Family Events Catharine Savage Brosman presents Arm in Arm Baton Rouge Gallery May 1, 2022 May 1, 2022 1:00 PM 4:00 PM On Sunday, May 1, Baton Rouge Gallery’s Sundays@4 series is honored to welcome Catharine Savage Brosman for a selection of readings from her newest book of poems, Arm in Arm, by the Mercer University Press. Brosman will be available for questions after the readings. As with all Sundays@4 presentations, this event is free and open for all to enjoy. A lovely review of the new work by writer Danny Heitman from The Advocate writes, “In the title poem of her new book, she recalls strolling with her husband, Patric, as a young couple in Paris, and then, much later in life, walking in London, “both slightly lame,” yet celebrating “older love, the sort that won’t give up.” It’s a lovely evocation of how relationships evolve, concluding poignantly as Brosman contemplates touching Patric’s extended arm again. He died in 2017.” Catharine Savage Brosman, known widely for her poetry, criticism, and essays, is Professor Emerita of French at Tulane University. She is the author of fourteen poetry collections, of which six appeared at LSU Press. Her latest are A Memory of Manaus (2017), Chained Tree, Chained Owls (2020), Clara’s Bees (2021), and Arm in Arm (2022). 1655010000 Family Events, Arts & Theatre Raymond Berthelot Presents, "The Middle Ages" Baton Rouge Gallery June 12, 2022 June 12, 2022 4:00 PM 6:00 PM Raymond Berthelot is the Parks Program Manager for the Louisiana Office of State Parks and teaches history with Baton Rouge Community College. His work has appeared in journals as diverse as Apricity Magazine, The Elevation Review, Journal of Caribbean Literatures, the Carolina Quarterly and DASH Literary Journal. His chapbook of poems, The Middle Ages, is published by Finishing Line Press. As with all Sundays@4 presentations, this event is free and open for all to enjoy. Though this is Ray Berthelot’s first book, it does not read that way. He has a practiced hand. Berthelot works the same way that Miles Davis shaped his solos to let the bare bones of song lines emerge. He knows what to put in and what to leave out, how to let the poem tell its own story. In The Middle Ages Ray Berthelot shows measures of verve, clarity and grace that not all writers ever learn to give the reader. - Ed Ruzicka, author of My Life in Cars and Engines of Belief The Middle Ages is, put frankly, good poetry from Mr. Berthelot. The poems are very deep and move along loving lines. This is sincere, clean and conscious poetry, sometimes humble and innocent, but always honest and warm, supportive and forceful. - Marco Tulio del Arca, Honduran poet and author of On the Walls of a Dream and Under the Sun of All More info on our website: https://www.batonrougegallery.org/.../2022/raymond-berthelot

1713675600 Family Events, Live Music Clay Parker and Jodi James Baton Rouge Gallery April 21, 2024 April 21, 2024 3:00 PM 5:00 PM On Sunday, April 21, Baton Rouge Gallery is delighted to host a performance and conversation with Clay Parker and Jodi James. As with all Sundays@4 performances, this will be free and open to the public. Clay Parker and Jodi James have their own brand of genre-blending sonic storytelling. Before their artistic paths converged, Parker and James roamed the musical landscape as lone troubadours, each nurturing their own raw and genuine sound. The result of this musical marriage is a blackout bingo card of Americana. Their album, “Your Very Own Dream" released this January, is at once plaintive folk and antique country, a breezy Hawaiian daydream- a bonfire ballad. Their lyrical riddles and haunting melodies have captivated audiences all across the country - they’ve run their share of rocky roads, collecting stories like souvenirs. Just as at home on stage at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as they are in the most intimate of listening rooms, Parker and James can adjust their dynamic to fit the occasion. Fans of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris will find a similar spell cast by Parker and James whose heady baritone and crystal bell tones Rolling Stone Magazine aptly described as “mesmerizing back porch music.” Learn more about the duo, and other events we host on our website: www.batonrougegallery.org
1716699600 Touring Acts, Family Events, Arts & Theatre, Live Music Mary Gauthier - Saved by a Song Baton Rouge Gallery May 26, 2024 May 26, 2024 4:00 PM 6:00 PM On Sunday, May 26, Baton Rouge Gallery is honored to host Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier for a very special Sundays@4. She will be reading from her 2021 book, “Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting,” an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song. As with all Sundays@4 events, this event will be free and open to all. This presentation is made possible through underwriting from Dr. Khanh Ho. Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together. Copies of Saved by a Song will be available for purchase during this event from Red Stick Reads. MUCH more info available on our website at www.batonrougegallery.org
1719118800 Family Events, Live Music Opus Vocal Ensemble Baton Rouge Gallery June 23, 2024 June 23, 2024 4:00 PM 6:00 PM On Sunday, July 28, Baton Rouge Gallery’s Sundays@4 series is delighted to welcome the Opus Vocal Ensemble, for a musical performance and discussion. As with all Sundays@4 performances, this will be free and open to the public. Opus Vocal Ensemble presents Sea.Star, is a choral soundscape inspired by the Ave Maris Stella hymn, the ocean, and journeys. The program features works by the infamous John Cage (the 4’33” Guy wrote some notes we promise!) and historical footnote, Giovanni Animuccia, nestled among music by brilliant living composers Joanne Metcalf, Fahad Siadat, and Kathryn Rose. Joanne's work diffracts the medieval chant through a mid-90s lens while Kathryn offers an entirely new chant, setting a medieval English translation of the original Latin. Fahad offers us the opportunity to travel across the ocean's tumultuous waves, carried on his modern interpretation of the original prayer, tone clusters, and rich overtones. Both performance and interactive installation, Sea.Star offers the audience an opportunity to participate in creation, to listen intently, to let the mind wander, to pray, to doodle, to catch up on some sudoku puzzles, perfectly at home surrounded by this month's combination of artists at the gallery. This concert combines familiar sounds of Renaissance polyphony and chant with some of the weirdest mouth sounds we can make. Opus is a collaborative chamber choir dedicated to sharing choral favorites as well as vocal music from the fringes: long-forgotten gems and cutting-edge compositions by living composers. We marry these works to explore a narrative, concept, or vague vibe, often to widespread praise. The ensemble has been featured by the Louisiana ACDA conference and Christ Church's Third Sunday Series as well as in weddings, funerals, recitals, concerts, and classrooms throughout Southeast Louisiana.

1744520400 Family Events, Live Music Ginna Paredes - Interactive Harp Performance Baton Rouge Gallery April 13, 2025 April 13, 2025 4:00 PM 7:00 PM On Sunday, April 13, Baton Rouge Gallery is happy to host harpist Ginna Paredes in an interactive harp performance. As with all Sundays@4 performances, this will be free and open to the public. After studying harp for two years with a visiting Fulbright Scholar, Ginna debuted her musical career with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador in 1990. She had walked away from a nearly completed degree in sculpting after hearing a harp performing live, in her hometown of Quito, Ecuador. Those who know Ginna, remember her as a Spanish teacher rather than as a musician. "I have walked the paths of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, but it was music that saved me. It has been music that, since I was 18 years old, has taken me on a journey of learning through Indiana, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas, weaving strings and bringing the harp to the hearts of those who listen to me. Louisiana, too, was where I shared this journey by teaching music and language. One day, while walking at the school where I worked, a soccer ball hit my head. Since then, I have struggled with learning and cognitive challenges, but music has saved me. For this reason, I now want to take a step forward into the field of music therapy, to reach those who have suffered a brain injury. My dream is to bring all this experience and knowledge back to the land where I was born, Ecuador.” - Peredes Sundays@4 is presented in partnership with the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area whose mission is to enhance the identity of our unique American landscape by preserving and promoting our heritage and by fostering progress for local champions that create authentic, powerful connections between people, culture, and the environment. During that time, Thompson volunteered at several social justice and community organizations, as Dialogue on Race Louisiana, the Unitarian Church of BR, Reading Friend, Humanity Amped, and Together Baton Rouge. This lifetime of experience has shaped how he sees the world around him, and how he interacts with the slow march of time. He has been married to my wife, MiJa, for 50 years and maintains that they are still friends, even after all this time. He has 4 kids and 3 grandkids. A Living legacy that he draws inspiration from.
